What filter replacement depends on during heavy smoke
During a wildfire or prolonged period of poor air quality, standard replacement schedules no longer apply. How often you need to swap out your filter depends on three key factors:
- Filter efficiency (MERV rating): Basic fiberglass filters let microscopic smoke pass right through. Higher-rated filters (MERV 11 to 13) capture fine particulate matter (PM2.5) but clog up much faster as a result.
- Fan operation: Running your HVAC system fan continuously on 'ON' instead of 'AUTO' scrubs indoor air more effectively, but it also loads the filter far more quickly.
- Home air leakage: Older or draftier homes allow more outdoor air into ductwork and living spaces, increasing the volume of ash and fine particulate matter your filter must catch.
Why smoke forces earlier filter swaps
Wildfire smoke carries millions of microscopic solid particles and liquid droplets. When your HVAC filter does its job and traps these particles, soot accumulates quickly in the pleated material. As the pores block up, airflow through your system slows down significantly.
A severely clogged filter creates heavy air resistance. This forces your blower motor to work harder, which can lead to overheating, strain on the system, or frozen evaporator coils during summer cooling.
How to manage your filter during a smoke event
To keep indoor air cleaner while protecting your equipment, follow these practical steps:
- Upgrade your filter: Use a MERV 11 or MERV 13 filter if your HVAC system can handle it. Lower MERV filters offer very little protection against fine smoke particles.
- Recirculate indoor air: Ensure your system or fresh-air intake damper is set to recirculate indoor air rather than drawing in smoky outdoor air.
- Inspect weekly: During active smoke advisories, pull out the filter once a week. If the pleats look dark grey or coated in dust, replace it immediately.
- Swap after the smoke clears: Once outdoor air quality returns to normal, put in a fresh filter to clean out lingering trapped fine dust and smoke odors.
Safety and airflow caution
Not every HVAC system is built to push air through dense, high-MERV filters. If you notice significantly reduced airflow from your vents, strange humming from the air handler, or ice building up on cooling lines, your filter may be restricting airflow too much.
