Why does my circuit breaker keep tripping?
The instinct is to treat a tripping breaker as the problem. It is not — it is the safety device correctly interrupting something that would otherwise start a fire. The useful question is which of three faults it is reacting to.
1. Overload — the common one
Too many things drawing current on one circuit. Classic culprits are space heaters, hair dryers, microwaves, and window air conditioners, especially several on the same circuit or sharing it with a bedroom’s worth of electronics. The tell is timing: it trips when you switch on one particular high-draw appliance, and it holds fine otherwise. The fix is redistributing load across circuits — or, if the circuit is genuinely undersized for how the room is used, having a dedicated one run.
2. Short circuit
A hot wire touching a neutral, producing a large sudden current. This trips instantly and forcefully. Look for a damaged cord, a scorched outlet, a burning smell, or discoloration around a receptacle. This is not a wait-and-see situation.
3. Ground fault
Current escaping to ground, often through moisture. GFCI outlets in kitchens, bathrooms, garages, and outdoors are designed to catch exactly this and will trip on their own — often after rain, on an exterior circuit. Reset the GFCI itself first; the breaker may be innocent.
What to actually do
- Unplug everything on the circuit, then reset the breaker. If it holds, add devices back one at a time — the one that trips it is your answer.
- If it trips with nothing plugged in, the fault is in the wiring itself. Stop there and call an electrician.
- Reset a breaker firmly: fully OFF first, then ON. Breakers rest in a middle position when tripped and will not reset from there.
- Never reset a breaker repeatedly to keep something running. That defeats the one device standing between a fault and a fire.
When to call today rather than eventually
Any burning smell, any scorch marks, a warm or buzzing panel, a breaker that will not reset at all, or repeated tripping with no load — these are all today problems. Electrical faults are one of the few home issues where the failure mode is a house fire, and diagnosis inside a panel is genuinely dangerous for anyone without training.
Also worth knowing: breakers wear out. One that trips at well below its rated load after years of service may simply be a failed breaker — but confirming that is an electrician’s call, not a guess.
